Packing a school bag: a simple checklist for children
The aim is to give your child an easy order to follow, rather than pack the bag for them. Doing it the night before leaves time to find a book or ask for help.
Tomorrow’s checklist
- Look at the day ahead: check the timetable and school instructions with an adult if needed.
- Choose books and notebooks: take only what is required.
- Check the pencil case: pencils, eraser and the equipment the school asks for.
- Pack anything special: PE kit, library books or a form to return, depending on the day.
- Plan for the morning: leave a reminder for last-minute items, such as a water bottle or snack if the school allows one.
- Close the bag and put it away: pick a place where it will be easy to find.
An adult checks without starting over
At first, go through the list together. Ask “What still needs to go in tomorrow?” instead of emptying the bag. Once the routine is familiar, your child can show you the list; you still check instructions and any special items.
If something is forgotten
Look for the missing step: was the list too long, the item hard to find or the instruction unclear? Adjust the reminder for the next day. Forgetting something does not erase the effort already made.
Print and personalise
On the routine sheet, write three to five useful steps for your household. A “to add tomorrow morning” note avoids ticking something off too early. You can draw a small school bag next to the list to make it easy to spot.
In ELIKHO
Add a “Pack my school bag” task to the evening routine. Your child ticks it off after doing it; a parent checks and approves the day. Only break it into several tasks if that genuinely helps your child follow the routine.
